La Vecchia Signora – Pottery

La Vecchia Signora means ‘The Old Lady’ in Italian.

I chose this name to bring reverence and courtesy to the long lived history that clay has in the world. Historians of the ancient times like Tacitus and Erodotus testify that clay pots and clay kitchen slate counters were found in old dwellings that go back to the Early Iron Age. Even before then, clay figurines were found in sites all over Europe that date as far back as 6000 BCE. The incredible array of shape and functionary vessels clay lends itself is astounding: cooking pots, funerary urns, ceramic wear, bricks, imposing sculptures.

This material is one of the most merciful companions to man through the ages.
